Physical Therapy Program

Physical Therapy is the treatment of physical dysfunction or injury by the use of therapeutic exercise and the application of modalities, intended to restore or facilitate normal function or development.  In the educational model of service delivery, treatment focuses on the ability of a student to function within the educational day with goals of service directly related to the student’s education.

Services provided by the Auglaize County ESC physical therapy staff include the following:

  • Assessment with an appropriate prescription from the child’s physician. The assessment is to include developmental abilities, the child’s function, orthopedic concerns, neurological concerns, and adaptive equipment recommendations.
  • Treatment if documented educational need is found by the educational team.
  • Adaptive equipment recommendations for seating, positioning and mobility needs.
  • Periodic re-evaluation of abilities as deemed necessary by the child’s educational team or by parental request.
  • Provide a list of resources for additional private therapy services and / or equipment as the need demands.
  • Provide information including home and or classroom programming, evaluative findings, and sensory stimulation suggestions (in coordination with OT) to the family and / or educational staff.
  • Maintain standards for lifting, transferring, safe play within a classroom environment, and general movement that insure the safety of the student and educational staff.

Occupational Therapy Program

Typically, the occupational therapist enters the educational process after the student is noted to be experiencing difficulties in school. As a profession, occupational therapy possesses a unique body of knowledge and a holistic view of the individual.   In the educational setting it is the role of the occupational therapist to assess areas that are relative to the student’s occupational performance, learning, work, play, and/or daily living skills and determine an educational need.  The occupational therapist then, designs and implements a program that supports the fulfillment of the student’s IEP.

Through the use of purposeful, goal directed activities, occupational therapists assist students to benefit from special education services.  Depending on the individual student, occupational therapy may include improvement of gross and fine motor skills, sensorimotor processing, coordination, adapting environments, organizing and using materials appropriately, and /or developing dressing and feeding skills appropriate to the learning environment.

Occupational therapists (OTR/L) and occupational therapy assistants (COTA) are a valuable asset to the educational team. Through collaboration with the educational team, they help to identify and implement therapeutic and special education interventions, in order to support student functional independence and academic success in the general education or alternative curriculum.  Occupational therapy staff uniquely contributes, in a professional manner and in a spirit of responsibility, to support and address student needs and total school accountability.

If you are interested in referring a student to occupational therapy for an evaluation, please contact the special education department in your district.
